There are core skills that can be found in both games. On top of this there are skills that are specific to the game. Out of these skills that are specific to the game some are the same with just a different name while others are similar but look like they have been tweaked. So rather than make the change in the prophecies' skill they made the change for factions. Then there are those that are altogther new that are found in factions only but there are skills that are completely unique to prophecies that require you to own both to have them all.

Factions is a stand alone game in that you only have to buy the one to play and nothing else. Everything else about the game makes it an expansion. Looking to play GW for the first time? Get prophecies.

Edit: I've already made a post comparing the two chapters. Personally I believe Factions bombed and only owes it's sales to the success of Prophecies. Primary game of choise at the moment, Oblivion.

Hmm, this thread made me think about this:

In future chapters weill non-core classes have expanded skills and drops? If an Assassin or Ritualist go to Tyria right now, there is nothing for their class to gain (secondary, but not primary). In future chapters where you will not be able to start as an Assassin or Ritualist*, what will there be for those classes going forward?
Can anyone confirm or rebuke this for me (us)?

*Anet had mentioned this before somewhere, or I heard it via rumor mill - can't recall.

For majority of PvP and PvE: Does this matter? I think the bottom line is to make both sides of the game play happy so we stick around and GW continues on.

Lol to the person who said there are more PvP'ers then PvE'ers.

I am glad to read this dicussion as i was about to start one.

For the last 2000 hours over 9 months i have lead a PvE Guild of more then 50 people for the last 8 months.

I have invested money and time on Ventrilo Servers and Website Registrations.

Prior to this Game i played Diablo 2 which had a WICKED weapon and armour generaton system. This game was a change but i liked it.

I have spoeken with over 50 gamers in private conversations and most are like me. I am about ready to sell all 3 of my accounts and my Guild and never play again.. in the last 3 days i have done hardly anything.

FACTIONS POSITIVES!! ----> The skills are GREAT the visuals are GREAT the classes are ok.

FACTIONS NEGATIVES!!----> PHROPECHIES is OBSELETE. Should have had a Weapon update or something at least. all the chest runs farming and everything almost in phophecies is trashed. i can solo fow but oooo what the point ectos shards parhment veullum chaos axes they have all nosed dived in price.

GREEN wpns are a joke people would rather pay more money for green items that spawn every day every time at same location. So more common the gold yet more expensive!!! (and cheap i hate green).

new armours made the old materials obselete. Should have change from a buy/demand market system. Since 90% of worlds drop are trash now.

Since the Factions release i see that Arena net almost FORCES u to play factions. pvpers can compete unles they have new skills.

THE world belongs to PvE!!! duh. the pvp game would have FAILED without the PvE world.

PLEASE PLEASE ARENA NET AND ALL FANS DEMAND AN UPDATE (like sorrows)
Fix some of the following problems in the next month b4 i sell all my accounts and Retire from GW forever..

list of gayness.
--> Cant get skils from quests
--> Gold wpns UNLESS FACTIONS worth
--> Gay Green weapons Ruin the markets since they are TOO common.
--> Story starts boring and slow. b4 was fight to survive.now its. Zzz mysery.
--> the 8 man sized party to fast into game slows the game play sooo much
--> To Choose to your Allinace u must beat over 50% of Factions.
--> Out dated supply and demand markets have left people grasping for cash.

In Closure.

The game is probaly being pushed in a more PvP direction. Thus i will be quiting if the PvE improved. PvP is rather pointless after time. People who aspire to be the highest rank merely ferget its a game and that one day u will lose it all. No game has lasted for ever. or i would still be playing pong.

Please Arena Net.
Update Tyria with some new weapons and armour.
MAYBE do like everyone always dreamed and Addplayable aeras to the south of Denravi. or Add a few zones like sorrows furnace in the Casttles in Kryta. which act as mere scenery at this time.

Notes:
1)PvP is about having fun and employing interesting strategies which is were more skills makes things more interesting.

2)I enjoy Factions much more than I enjoy prophecies from a end game point of view. Much more interesting PvE, PvP and mixed style play. More armor varieties and more pvp playable weapons.

3)You really have to discount much of the pricing at the moment, since people are still hung up on what is new. At some point people will return to FoW and those prices will increase.

4)Very few things in prophecies were significantly nerfed: MMs, HoD swords being the big two in my mind.

5)As stated, many prophecy builds are not only playable, but are optimal. I only use one faction skill on my monk extensively.

Unless you're an elementalist. Then the skills suck balls. The visuals and new classes are nice though.

If you cannot understand something so easy as to why skills from a new game cannot be offered for FREE to another game, then I guess quitting really IS your best option.

Yes. One question.

What were you smoking when you watched American Pie?

I mean, it's a funny movie and all.. but "one of the greatest movies of all times"?

That's insanely ludicrous.

Anet has made steps against farming for a reason. It does bad things. These negetives sound like complaints that you can't get the profit you used to by farming because of these changes anet has made. There are way more valid negetive points that can be made about factions which some you have stated but those I quoted are not them.

Is it really too much for people to grasp anet's views on farming? What kind of hint they are putting out with these changes that either make farming more difficult or (in the recent update) make it not worth the time to farm by increasing the drop rates so anyone can find what they are looking for without having to resort to farming themselves or buy from farmers for insane prices.

Why must you download GWF updates - If you are complaining about PvP from the Start ... Take a Min to think about your question -

You are upset that in PvP you feel you have an unfair advantage due to Some Joe or Jane has access to a more diverse Skill Bar than you. Thus you are incountering GWF skills on your GWP account, Thus you need the GWF updates because you come in contact with GWF.

Its like getting inoculated for a Virus. Just because you don't travel to a new area, doesn't mean that someone from the new area doesn't travel to your location and you can still come in contact with the Virus!

LOL, if anet give you the new skills even though you do not buy the expansion, what is the point of making and selling expansion?..XD

besides, it is not really the fact that you will be outplayed if you do not have GW:F..lolz

The OP did make one valid point. GW:P players who do not buy Factions were stuck downloading the "expansion" before Factions went live. That must be very frustrating.

That being said, I don't use many Faction skills with my Tryian characters. I think I've bought 6, but only use two consistently. It is rather like Magic the Gathering in that regard. More skills = more choices but not more power.

Default Define Stand Alone

Let's define "Stand Alone".

The way I see it, Factions is stand alone, only in the sense of buying and installing the game. As far as actual gameplay goes, it is far from "stand alone". Every thing is linked, from skills to economy. Sure you don't need to buy both, but adjustments and implementations in each world will always directly or indirectly effect the other (drops, stats, skills, what have you).

What you are asking for, is that each expansion..er chapter will have its own servers, so they each perform in a bubble so to speak. Never gonna happen.

Personaly, I think it makes for an interesting and dynamic gameplay. An ever changing and evolving world.

My Factions ele is kicking butt and I don't think she uses any Prophecies only skills, neither does my Catha monk, and they both do fine, so in escence they are faction stand alone.

My Ranger doesn't use any faction skills, my Necro only has the Flesh Golem and my warrior only one sword skill from factions (which I bought just 'cause).

What I'm saying is I have the full spectrum of skill sets so I can tell you; you don't need both to have fun in either.

Mes will be in chapter 3 and my assassin is waiting for the single slot purchase

PvP vs PvE ther are enough of both so neither should be ignored.
